September 22, 2020

Do you know there are many spectacular things on Netflix that you’ve never heard of? What about the top Latin series streaming on Netflix right now?

Streaming platforms have become our best friends, and if you don’t binge on series you may be left out of the conversation. Recently, there has been a surge in Spanish speaking productions that have gained worldwide popularity in the field usually reserved for US series.

We have prepared for you a selection of the top Latin American TV shows that are a must-watch on Netflix. We can divide them roughly into two categories: the ones that deal with cartels and drugs, and the other ones.

Let’s start with the drug cartels. These are the most interesting titles:

1. El Señor de los Cielos

Most people would say that Narcos was the first show to explore the subject, but Mexico felt the vibe in 2013 with a series that has gone on for seven seasons dealing with Amado Carrillo Fuentes, a man who excelled in transporting drugs across Colombia, Mexico, and the US.

2. Narcos Colombia

One of the first internationally famous titles that discovered how attractive drug stories look on the small screen. The show first aired in 2015 and it made everybody an expert on Pablo Escobar and his crimes through the following three seasons.

3. Narcos México

Narcos México followed the flow in 2018. This time the story focuses on the illegal drug trade in México. Great actors are a real bonus to the interesting plot. Diego Luna grows as a character and becomes a greater villain with every episode.

4. El Chapo

The series first aired in April 2017 and took it Netflix by storm. This Spanish speaking series with a Brazilian actor playing “El Chapo” is absolutely fascinating and the whole cast deserves a number of awards. You cannot miss this title!

5. Surviving Escobar

Sixty episodes produced in Colombia will tell you what happened after the fall of the most famous drug criminal. The show is based on a book by Jhon Jairo Velásquez, the right hand of Pablo Escobar, and after its great acceptance in Colombia, Netflix decided to step in and make everybody enjoy the show from the comfort of their homes.

The next couple of extremely popular Latin series on Netflix have nothing or very little to do with drugs.

6. Luis Miguel: La Serie

You might remember that in 2018 every Spanish-speaking person was talking about Luis Miguel: La Serie. Diego Boneta, playing the main character, became so popular that he was more recognized among the younger audiences than the real Luis Miguel. Óscar Jaenada nailed it as Luis Miguel’s father and the whole world is waiting for season two to be released this year.

7. The House of Flowers

The House of Flowers is the most recent Netflix favorite. This black comedy-drama was also released in 2018 but it has probably just started appearing on your “trending” strip after the final season was released.

You will get a peek at an upper-class Mexican family trying hard not to lose the family’s facade of perfection. That’s life!
