There is a long history of successful Latinos on Broadway, but right now a few Latin names top the charts and we’ll tell you who they are.
Broadway is the worldwide capital of theater and it’s filled with Latino talent. However, who are the biggest Latinos on Broadway these days? Well, the competition is fierce, but this is our Top 5:
Miranda is without a doubt the most successful Latino on Broadway these days, and you could make a case that never before has a Latino have had more success than him in the history of US theater.
This New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent is the genius behind the widely acclaimed musical “Hamilton”. His award-winning musical has just hit the $1 billion barrier in global sales, making him one of the world’s top-earning celebrities. Hard to argue with the first place on this list.
Miranda is now even expanding his reach away from Broadway, as “Hamilton” the movie will be available to stream on Disney+ on July 3.
Winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Lindsay Mendez is one of the main Latinos on Broadway these days. Mendez is originally from California, but of Mexican and Russian-Jewish descent. She got the Tony for her role in “Carousel”.
By winning that award, the most prestigious in the theater industry in the United States, Mendez joined a small group of Latinas that have won the Tony.
She’s only the sixth Latina ever to have won it, which puts her in the company of Rita Moreno, Sara Ramirez, Karen Olivo, Priscila Lopez and Chita Rivera. Besides her role in “Carousel” Mendez has participated in “Wicked”, “Everyday Rapture” and “Godspell”.
An American actress of Mexican and Filipino descent, Noblezada is one of the up-and-coming stars on the Broadway sky. She has received two Tony nominations and won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, as one of the main soloists.
Noblezada was widely acclaimed for her role in “Miss Saigon” and is now part of the cast of “Hadestown”. She’s definitely one of the young Latin talents to keep an eye on Broadway.
Robin De Jesús
Robin De Jesús is an American actor of Puerto Rican descent. De Jesús has been nominated three times for the Tony and is one of the most consolidated Latino names in the industry.
De Jesús has participated in the Broadway musical “In the Heights”, “La Cage aux Folles” and “The Boys in the Band”, he received a Tony nomination for each of these roles. He also played a part in the famous Broadway production “Wicked”.
A Californian actress of Mexican and Jewish descent, Mandy Gonzalez is one of the most established Latin talents on Broadway. She has participated in some of the biggest Broadway productions such as “In the Heights”, “Wicked”, and “Hamilton”.
Since 2019, Gonzalez has been playing the role of Mrs. Walker on the John F. Kennedy Center’s production of “The Who’s Tommy”.
