December 12, 2019

Surely, no one would dare to deny that the Latin community has left an indelible mark on the United States. In projects such as agriculture, brewery, construction, among others, we Latinos have left our mark throughout the nation.

Many prominent entrepreneurs have emerged throughout Latin America. As a result, prestigious and famous brands have been created that have had transcendental success, even in the United States. What are the best Latin American brands in the country? Below you will find the ranking of the top 5 Latin American brands in the United States.

Lala

In recent years, Lala has achieved unimaginable success. It has become the fifth milk brand in the world and the number 1 in Latin America. In the United States, Lala has shown a well-marked success becoming the second dairy producer in the country. All of this great progress has been the result of good acquisitions.

During the years 2008 and 2009, the United States faced a dairy crisis, milk prices had dropped up to 35% in just two months. This led many dairy companies to make the decision to reduce costs, or in some cases, withdraw from the business altogether. However, Lala was still growing and getting big.

During the crisis, the company acquired, in just one year, 21 plants throughout the country. They bought large and well-known American companies. All this investment, resulted in a large increase in sales throughout the country; a 71% increase in income compared to the year before the crisis. Currently, Lala is the second most important milk brand in the United States.

Bimbo

Bimbo is a world leader in the bakery business, taking up 90% of the sales in this industry. The United States is no exception. Bimbo is one of the brands with the most bread sales in the country.

However, it was not always like that. In the early 2000s, Bimbo was losing a lot of money in the United States. Its highest sales were concentrated in Mexico and Latin America. But, in the United State they were losing up to 67 million dollars. But everything changed in 2011, when the company acquired Alimentos Fargo and Sara Lee Corporation. This led the brand to become the top bread maker in the world.

Consequently, sales in the United States now amount to about 48% of Bimbo’s worldwide earnings, which is a surprising achievement.

Corona

Corona is a world-famous Mexican beer. It was created in 1925 by Braulio Iriarte Goyeneche. It was the second brand produced by the Grupo Modelo. Over the years, Corona has become increasingly popular. It is currently distributed in more than 159 countries in America, Asia and Europe.

It is worth mentioning that it wasn’t until 1985 that Grupo Modelo began operations in the United States, with the purpose of expanding production for Mexicans living in the country. By the end of the 90s, sales had increased by 80%, selling in all the states of the nation and becoming the beer preferred by Americans.

Today, the beers with the highest sales volume in the United States are: Corona Extra, Corona Light and Corona Cero. In the year 2000, Grupo Modelo acquired all the rights of the Corona brand, with the aim of increasing the production of “Corona” and its new presentation “Corona Light”, becoming the number one brand of light beer in the United States.

Maseca

Maseca is a recognized brand of Mexican flour, used to make tortillas and other traditional Mexican dishes. It is mostly consumed by Latin Americans, but in recent years the brand has been positioning itself with the American population. The reason is that Maseca has many nutritional properties, since this corn flour contains folic acid.

Currently, Maseca is sold worldwide. In the United States, Maseca is the fifth most popular brand in the flour sector. It has 20 plants across the country with a capacity of 960,000 metric tons per year of wheat flour tortillas, corn tortillas, corn chips and other related products. Over the past few years, Maseca has been increasing its sales ever more throughout the American market.

Modelo Especial

Modelo Especial is a beer produced by Grupo Modelo. It was created in 1966 and over the years it has gained increasing popularity. In the year 2011 it was the third most popular beer in America.

Currently, it continues to rank among the best-selling beers in the United States. In addition, it accounts for over 36% of the sales of Grupo Modelo throughout the country. Modelo Especial has become a popular beer for Americans, and continues to increase in sales every year.

These are just a few of the most successful Latin American brands in the United States, but there are many more. In this way, it is clear that we, Latinos, have left our mark in the American landscape.
