August 18, 2022

One of the biggest music festivals in the United States and the world is back in 2022. Find out some interesting facts about this year’s Coachella and which artists represented Latin America.

Since 1999, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has grown year after year to become one of the most important events in the music industry. This festival brings together some 250,000 visitors who flock to the town of Indio, California, for a cultural experience filled with music and art. Of course, the pandemic interrupted its execution for a couple of years, but last April 2022 the Californian desert was once again filled with the splendor of the long-awaited show.

Throughout its history, the Coachella Festival has been characterized by presenting renowned and emerging musicians from different genres such as rock, alternative rock, indie, dance, electronic, R&B, hip hop, reggaeton and pop, among others. Prince, Beyoncé and Radiohead are just some of the artists and bands that have given legendary performances at the prestigious event.

Latin America has also played at the Empire Polo Club, where the Coachella Festival is held. In fact, the participation of Latin artists has multiplied over the past five years. Julieta Venegas, Café Tacuba, J Balvin, Rosalía and Bad Bunny are on this list.

What was Coachella 2022 like?

This time, the festival was held during two weekends in April. The experience took place from the 15th to the 17th and from the 22nd to the 24th. The event was also broadcast live on its streaming channel on YouTube.

Coachella undoubtedly set the tone for the recovery of major music events after the health crisis. Ticket sales opened in January and it took just 75 minutes for the event to sell out. Ticket prices ranged from $450 to $1,120.

The headliners were Harry Styles and Billi Eilish. Also, the likes of Doja Cat and The Weeknd were in attendance. Others in attendance included Lil Baby, Megan Thee Stallion, Disclosure, Danny Elfman, Phoebe Bridgers, MIKA, Conan Gray, Carly Rae Jepsen, Big Sean, 21 Savage, Flume, and Run the Jewels.

On this occasion, Latin artists had a greater participation and lit up the stages with all the flavor that characterizes them. The list included exponents of various genres, among them:

  • Jean Dawson, Mexican rapper.
  • Grupo Firme, regional Mexican music band.
  • The Martinez Brothers, Puerto Rican-American techno duo.
  • Anitta, Brazilian pop-funk singer.
  • Ed Maverick, Mexican folk singer-songwriter.
  • Nicki Nicole, Argentine rapper.
  • Pabllo Vittar, Brazilian pop singer and drag queen.
  • Layla Benitez, Puerto Rican-American DJ.

  • Nathy Peluso, Argentinean singer-songwriter of alternative music.

In addition to them, other representatives of Latin culture present at the festival were: Chicano Batman, Natanael Cano, Omar Apollo, Ela Minus, Banda MS, Jessie Reyez, Alaina Castillo and Paco Osuna.

One of the Latin artists who made history at Coachella 2022 was Pabllo Vittar. With her explosive show, she became the first drag queen to perform on one of the event’s stages. Singing in Spanish and Portuguese, and addressing the audience in English, Vittar undoubtedly displayed all her artistic power.

Karol G put on a show that went far beyond the expected reggaeton. In addition to performing her hits, she paid tribute to other established Latin artists who she believes opened doors and allowed her to be there. She performed songs by Ricky Martin, Selena, Shakira, Daddy Yankee and Celia Cruz in front of 150,000 spectators.

Another unforgettable show was given by Anitta. With an impressive display, with lots of dancing and color, she recreated Rio de Janeiro on stage. As if that were not enough, she had Saweetie and Snoop Dogg as guests. With the favela as a backdrop, Anitta sang in 3 languages and delighted the audience with her hit Envolver, number 1 on the Billboard Glogal Songs chart.
