A couple of years ago, the pandemic that would change the world order began. Inevitably, the new economic and social context has transformed business environments and human talent acts in response to new motivations. Faced with this untimely and dizzying reality, a “good leader” with a different approach has also emerged.
It is true that throughout time there have been excellent leaders in all fields. In this sense, there are common attributes that define what it is to be a good leader. Specifically in the business sector, some basic characteristics that denote successful leadership are:
- Good communication. A leader’s ability to transmit the organizational culture, to make his or her work team feel identified and have a sense of belonging, is fundamental to achieve optimal results. Related to this, empathy and active listening are inherent elements of positive business leadership.

Respecting employees’ time, providing a pleasant work environment, and offering opportunities for growth are some of the actions that a good leader uses to motivate his or her collaborators. It is no secret that keeping workers happy makes them more productive and loyal.
- Make assertive decisions. Leadership has a lot to do with the ability to make decisions that influence the entire organization. In this regard, a good leader can make quick and courageous decisions.
- Negotiation skills and management efficiency. Resilient leaders manage resources and human talent with flexibility, adaptation, and self-confidence. Likewise, they use arguments to persuade and generate trust, being transparent.
Challenges of a good leader
Related to the above, successful leaders are not necessarily those who do not have problems, but rather those who have the necessary skills to face and overcome in the best way the situations they face. Especially in today’s fast changing business world, leaders must keep pace and adapt to the demands of new realities, leaving behind the security of the known. Without a doubt, the challenges they must deal with are many, let’s look at 3 of them:

It is well known that the healthcare crisis accelerated and exponentially increased teleworking. The need to work remotely forced leaders to manage their teams differently. On the other hand, today’s good leaders place human resources at the center of everything as the key to success. The well-being of the individual is now more valued and cultivated to increase his or her potential and create attachment to the company.

Nowadays, consumers are more intelligent, have access to electronic devices with internet, are more careful when spending their money and, in addition, many of them care about brand values. We must also consider that shopping habits have changed and continue to change. Online stores, social networks and search engine queries are a daily occurrence.
According to this reality, leaders must anticipate market behaviors, be aware of trends and know their customers’ profiles very well to adopt new marketing strategies, adapt products and services to consumers’ changing requirements and stay one step ahead of the competition.
3. Incorporate new technologies
Much has been said about the digital transformation of business, digitization, and automation. At this stage of technological evolution and the immediacy that customers expect in terms of attention to their requirements and resolution of their needs, it is essential to incorporate digital tools in all possible processes of organizations.
This is a challenge that previously fell only to those in charge of the IT area, but now senior managers and department leaders must be up-to-date to introduce them in every corner of the company. Although they don’t have to be experts in cloud storage, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, data science or e-commerce, a good leader must internalize and socialize the importance of using these and other technologies to optimize the company’s operational, administrative, and commercial processes for its growth with a long-term vision.
